During a press conference held after a two-day government caucus, Premier McKenna responded to the idea that Dr. Morgentaler might open a freestanding abortion clinic in New Brunswick by promising “he’s going to get the fight of his life from us.” Dr. Morgentaler, a Holocaust survivor who had faced several court cases and significant jail time for his work providing abortions in Quebec, responded with amusement in a letter published March 7, 1988. He repeated his offer to open the clinic in cooperation with the provincial government and offered to send Premier McKenna a copy of his book, Abortion and Contraception to help him better understand the issue.
