The McKenna Liberal government passed An Act to Amend An Act Respecting the New Brunswick Medical Society and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick. This legislation removed the restrictions imposed in 1985 by Premier Hatfield, which threatened physicians who performed abortions outside of approved hospitals with the suspension or loss of their medical license. McKenna’s amendment did not change the rules created by Regulation 84-20, which meant that an abortion would not be covered by Medicare unless it was “performed by a specialist in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology in a[n approved] hospital facility … and two medical practitioners certify in writing that the abortion was medically required.”
