Dr. Victor D. McLaughlin, Registrar of the New Brunswick College of Physicians and Surgeons issued a memorandum on abortion entitled “Regarding the Abortion Controversy” to College members. The letter urged members to be aware that both sides of the abortion debate watch medical behaviour very closely. It reminded members that under New Brunswick law, the practice of abortions outside of hospitals was considered professional misconduct and would be treated as such by the College. Dr. McLaughlin concluded the letter saying “Until such time as the federal government passes new legislation, the situation will continue to be very volatile. We cannot overemphasize to members of the college the importance of being very conscious to avoid becoming the test case which is being sought by both ends of the spectrum of public opinion.” Contrary to the warnings in this internal communication, an article in the Telegraph Journal the following day reported that the New Brunswick College of Physicians and Surgeons had “no comment” on the abortion issue. |
