September 28th, 1982

Birthright is a Catholic anti-abortion organization that was founded in Toronto in 1968. Dr. Everett Chalmers, for whom Fredericton’s main hospital is named, was a member of the board of directors of Birthright from 1980-1983 suggesting that he had some sympathy for the anti-abortion movement. However, this support was not limitless. On September 28, 1982, Chalmers wrote to the Secretary of the New Brunswick Right to Life Association expressing his disapproval of the idea that an abortion could never be the right decision, and calling that position “an extremely radical, irresponsible attitude.”
