April 30, 1988
Hosted by Choix NB Choice, an organization consisting of approximately ninety members in Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton, the Forum on Abortion was intended to be an “all-sides” presentation on the abortion debate in New Brunswick. Sources are unclear about whether it was held on April 30 or May 1, 1988. Speakers included director of the Toronto Morgentaler Clinic Andrea Knight, birth control advocate and physician Dr. Marion Powell, and a member of the Saint John Right to Life Association. Four days before the event, the Right to Life Association pulled out of the event, claiming that Choix NB Choice had been misleading about the bipartisan nature of the event. Tickets cost C$12 (the equivalent of just over C$26 in 2023), and included brunch, a panel of speakers moderated by former Saint John Mayor and lawyer Eric Teed (OC QC), and a Question &Answer period. Both Premier Frank McKenna and then-Provincial Health Minister Raymond Frennette were invited, but there is no record of them attending. |
