March 20, 1987

According to an article in the Daily Gleaner, five hospitals provided abortions at the beginning of 1987: Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, Moncton City Hospital, the Miramichi Hospital, Oromocto Hospital and Saint John Regional Hospital. Staff writer David Meagher cites an Advisory Council on the Status of Women brief presented to health and community service departments across the province. The brief argues that women in Northern New Brunswick had to travel “inordinately far” to access care. It calls for the re-activation of dormant Therapeutic Abortion Committees (TACs) in Bathurst, Campbellton, Woodstock, and Sackville, as well as for the creation of a TAC at the Edmunston Regional Hospital.
