After the Supreme Court struck down s 251 of the Criminal Code, Premier McKenna called on the federal government to regulate abortion nationally, but that did not happen. Without any federal regulations, it fell to the provinces to regulate abortion. Premier McKenna called a press conference and described a policy in which two doctors would be required to approve an abortion for it to be covered by Medicare, at one of four approved hospitals. Crucially, this policy was only announced, it was not formally adopted at this time. Both the pro and anti-choice movements came out against this policy. |
