The Gallant Liberal government introduced an amendment to Regulation 84-20, which would come into effect on January 1, 2015, to remove the requirement that a Medicare-funded abortion be performed by a specialist in obstetrics or gynaecology after being certified as medically necessary by two physicians. The requirement that the abortion be performed in an approved hospital remained in place.
